This guide will explain the steps involved in having a breast screening x-ray (mammogram)
Every 3 years women aged 50-70 will be sent an invitation for free breast screening.
Women will have their breast screening at a screening centre or at a mobile screening van.
The Radiographer or receptionist will check each woman’s details when she arrives for her appointment.
The female Radiographer will explain how the breast x-ray (mammogram) is taken.
A female Radiographer will take the breast x-ray (mammogram). This may be uncomfortable but only lasts a few seconds.
Two trained film readers check the x-rays to look for changes in the breast tissue.
Women will be sent their results in writing within 2-3 weeks.
If an appointment is missed, a letter is sent asking the woman to arrange another appointment.
